October’s Wine Night: An Evening in Italy!

twbg_tcv_logo_cmyk_cIn anticipation of October’s Italian Wine Night, we asked host Chris Curtis a few questions about wine. Chris has been a Wine Consultant with the Country Vintner for 3 weeks (!).  But don’t worry, he’s been running Sante Wine Bar in Asheville for 6 years, and generally knows what he’s talking about.  He misses San Francisco, where he lived for 4 years before AVL, but he loves living in the mountains with his wife and 2 year old son. Also, he loves Italian wine!

Do you prefer a modern or traditional style Italian wine? I personally prefer a slightly more traditional, rustic style Italian red.  And super minerally, high-acid whites.

What are the most popular wine regions in Italy? The most popular Italian wine regions are probably Chianti, and the Veneto, where we get most of our supply of Pinot Grigio and Prosecco.

What should you expect to spend on a decent Italian wine? You can find decent, everyday Italian wine for as little as $10 or $12.  And if you can bump that up to $15 or $20, you can get a truly great bottle of wine.

What Italian wine would you reach for any day of the week? I tend to like lighter bodied, northern Italian reds like Barberas and Dolcettos.  Those would be my go to, any night ‘pizza’ wine.

What drives your passion for wine? I love trying new wines and discovering new grapes and regions.  And Italy is great for that.  They have something like 1300 indigenous grapes.  There’s always a new one to try!
